Here’s a list of the podcasts I’m currently listening to that generally are an hour or more per episode. These are my road trip or working around the house podcasts.
Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History
These are really history audiobooks release for free. Dan Carlin has the amazing ability to take a historical event and zoom way out, taking in the global and historic context of an event, and then zoom way in, highlighting what it was like for the individual caught in the march of history at a point in time. Each episode is in the neighborhood of four or five hours, and series can be from three to six episodes. They only come out once or twice a year, but it’s like a big Christmas present when a new episode drops.
Because he releases episodes so infrequently, Dan Carlin started a Hardcore History Addendum podcast, which allows him to do other topics or interviews between the release of HH series episodes.
Art of Manliness Podcast
Brett McKay is one of the best interviewers I’ve listened to, and the range and breadth of guests he brings to his podcast is just amazing. From philosophy to survival craft, from relationships to entrepreneurship, history to fitness, every episode is insightful and ultimately useful in improving my body, mind, and soul. While definitely targeted towards men, I find myself recommending episodes to Sara on the regular, and we consistently have great conversations about parenting, diet, excerise, business, finances, everything! Coming out with multiple episodes a week, the AoM podcast is one of my regular go-tos.
The Stacking Benjamins Show
I never thought I’d be a person that recommends a personal finance podcast. I can honestly say, this podcast does such a great job disguising sound financial teaching and advise in an entertaining format. The hosts have such a great time together, complete with 8-ball predictions, trivia, special guests, and math joke-offs. My baseline financial IQ has greatly increased with minimum pain listening to the Stacking Benjmains crew.
Ologies by Allie Ward
I love learning about everything. Honestly, I could sit and listen to a person that sorts recycling and find it fascinating on how the system works and the processes and everything. Allie Ward is my spirit animal in this respect. She is the most enthusiastic learner and is interested in everything! She brings a contagious enthusiam to every topic she approaches, be it falconry or deep sea worms or abstract math. She does drop an occasional f-bomb in her excitment, but her Smologies are shorter and more kid-friendly.
Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey & David Spade
The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe
Mike Rowe, the well-known host of Dirty Jobs, has a podcast that has morphed from “a series of short mysteries for the curious mind with a short attention span” to include interviews, audiobook excerpts, and even conversations and coffee with his mom, author Peggy Rowe.
Literally! with Rob Lowe
Sara and I mainly are acquainted with Rob Lowe from his character on Parks & Rec, the ever positive Chris Traeger. Rob Lowe shows that he really is that positive person in his podcast where he has great, thoughtful conversations with a wide range of people.
